My Honest Dell S2722QC Monitor Review
In general, the monitor lives up to my expectations. There are a few things to keep in mind if you’re running Monterey 12.1 on an M1 Mac. Apple has opted to activate VRR for external displays that support the capability by default for some inexplicable reason. This implies that when you wake up your laptop/monitor from sleep, the display will automatically switch to VRR 40-60hz, which is not ideal. Some people have observed flickering; I haven’t seen it myself, but you want complete 60hz at all times. At the time of writing this review, there is no method to completely stop this protocol. Every time, you’ll have to manually change the refresh rate to a constant 60hz. In the OSD menu, there is no method to deactivate VRR on the Dell S2722QC Monitor display. It’s quite inconvenient, and I’m hopeful that either Dell or Apple will add this feature.
Second, in order to receive full 4K 60hz RGB 30-bit, you must set USB-Prioritization to “High Resolution.” It’s set to “High Data Rate” by default, which limits the output to 4K 60hz ycbcr (24-bit, I believe?) output. this is less desirable. It took me a while to figure this out since it isn’t mentioned openly anywhere. This, I think, limits the monitor’s USB connector to 2.0 speeds, so there is a compromise.
