My Honest Acer SB220Q Review

This monitor, priced at $90 as of July 2020, deserves the praise it has received and continues to receive. Upon opening the box, one may be disappointed by the poor factory calibration, but Acer’s built-in menu provides ample control to improve image quality.

Pros:

The monitor displays vivid colors and sharp images, both close-up and from a distance. It has a stated 72% NTSC color gamut coverage, which equates to close to 100% sRGB coverage, and an industry standard 6-bit + FRC (equal to 8-bit) color depth.

It boasts a 100,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, which outperforms similarly priced IPS monitors, and a standard 1000:1 Static Contrast Ratio.

The 102 PPI pixel density results in a subtle improvement in image quality when viewed up close, compared to 92 PPI monitors.

The Color Adjustment Menu provides control over RGB and CMY gains, bias, hues, and saturation levels, while the Picture Menu allows adjustments to brightness, contrast, gamma, blackness, and includes a blue light filter, adaptive contrast, and Super Sharpness option. The Game Menu includes FreeSync for AMD GPUs and Overdrive options.

Cons:

The bezels are thicker than desired, about 1cm on the top, left, and right sides, detracting from the frameless design.

The top-down viewing angle is noticeably darker than when viewed head-on.

Although the DCR is 100M:1, the display lacks HDR capabilities and high contrast control zones, leading to brighter blacks in scenes with heavy dark tones.

The Super Sharpness option in the Picture Menu only has an on/off switch and lacks granular control.

The whites are slightly warmer on the color temperature chart and may appear different when viewed alongside a cooler display.

The monitor only tilts back 15°, which is less than most budget monitors, and the power button is indistinguishable from the other menu buttons.

In conclusion, the Acer SB220Q Bi is a great budget choice for those who primarily use their monitor for spreadsheet viewing, word processing, internet browsing, and casual gaming. However, for competitive gamers, photographers, professional editors, or content creators, a higher-end monitor may be necessary.
