My Honest Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S Gaming Laptop Review

This is an excellent laptop, capable of running AAA games at maximum settings. In order to avoid any kind of manipulation during transport, it was well-packaged with seals. Neoprene laptop sleeves were given out as part of the deal. Since there are no carrying options, I’d advise obtaining a backpack or carrying case if you want to use this as a portable laptop cover. It’s soft and will protect your laptop better than leaving it exposed. Additional hardware for installing a 2.5-inch drive was also provided, including a cable and screws for doing so.

Wide viewing angles are provided by an IPS panel with a resolution of 1080p 3ms 144hz.Gaming on 60 Ghz displays is unplayable after using a 144 Hz panel for the first time. It was 144Hz displays that wrecked my previous gaming laptop, since the contrast between them and 60Hz panels is so obvious. At 720p, the camera is adequate. Using it for more than a quick video chat with a few pals or a quick Zoom conference isn’t a good idea. It’s not compatible with Windows Hello, either, sadly. Because of this, the laptop will prefer to utilize the integrated graphics when you aren’t playing games or doing anything else that would need a lot of GPU power, such as heavy work. The RTX 2060 6GB graphics card alone sells for $400, so this laptop offers a lot of value. The latest ray-tracing architecture is RTX, which is based on this technology. Realistic lighting effects are now being included in games by developers, but you’ll need a card that can handle them if you want to make use of this new feature.

The RTX 2060 on Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S gaming laptop is a powerful graphics card. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, I was able to get an average FPS of 70. In GTA V, on high settings, the temperature reached 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s unusual that this laptop includes a “Turbo” button. After unboxing the laptop, you won’t be able to tell exactly what it does, but it basically overclocks your GPU and pushes the fans into overdrive to deal with any excess heat that comes with overclocking. I saw an average of a 10FPS improvement on the two games I tested the FPS on. It’s a little loud when the fans are running at maximum power. Thermal management and Acer’s marketed “4th Gen AeroBladeTM 3D technology” fans deserve credit for keeping the laptop cool even when the CPU and GPU are working hard, which means you can comfortably play games on it while sitting down. The keyboard has a Predator button in addition to the Turbo button. By pressing this button, you may see the current temperatures of your laptop’s CPU and GPU, as well as the laptop’s total temperature. Lighting and GPU overclocking options are available in this section, and you can also adjust your fan speed to a custom setting or leave it on automatic if you like. The UEFI BIOS is quite limited since Acer has an application that manages these settings from the operating system. You can’t change voltages or do any kind of manual overclocking, but since the application does all that for you, and many gamers don’t overclock their systems because they think it might be too complicated or risky, this makes it easy to do so with a simple click of the turbo button or drop-down menus in the application. You’ll need to access the BIOS (press F2 when the laptop is powered on) and deactivate the POST sound. As soon as you power on the laptop, it plays a sound file which, for some reason, sounds like the engine of a jet engine. I didn’t use it since I found it obnoxious, but I’m glad the BIOS provided the choice to disable it. In the BIOS, there isn’t a lot of room for modification. It includes WiFi 6 as well! You can add up to 32GB of RAM (two 16GB modules) because the DIMMS are user-replaceable.

Using OS performance data, the operating system is preconfigured (such as not using the Aero theme). I strongly advise you to uninstall any unwanted software you find.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S laptop’s build quality begins to betray its cheap price point here. Even though the laptop is built entirely of plastic, it bends quite readily, particularly around the display. Although the plastic trackpad may be used for minor activities like surfing the web, it isn’t very responsive overall. I wish more laptop makers would stop using the two little holes for the sound beneath the laptop. Please just include the speakers on the top. Even with the operating system volume set to 100 and the game volume set to 100, it’s difficult to hear certain games when the speakers shoot downward. Because of this, you’ll need headphones to go with your laptop.

The following ports are available:

There are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, an RJ45 ethernet port on the left side, and an audio jack.

A mini displayport, HDMI, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, and a USB-C utilizing 3.2 Gen 2 are all on the right side of the laptop.

The charging connector is located to the right of the screen. Acer deserves credit for placing the laptop’s charging port in the middle of the back.

However, don’t expect to play any demanding games on this laptop until you’re plugged in for at least six hours. I was able to get roughly two games in with a few minutes of breaks in between.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-54-760S laptop’s design is something I’d want to discuss. However, I believe Acer has to take into consideration the sort of individual who will be purchasing this laptop. Those seeking a gaming laptop that they can also take to class are likely to be students. A gaming laptop does not have to look like a “gaming laptop” to be considered a gaming laptop. In my view, a more understated design and the elimination of all LEDs from the laptop’s outside would appeal to a far broader audience.

As a whole, this laptop is a fantastic bargain. For the price, you’ll receive a powerful gaming laptop that’s ready for anything.
