My Honest Review on LG 27UN850-W Monitor
I bought this monitor to get more screen property to operate from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s nice to be able to have a Zoom or Teams conference underway, to get a folder or browser window accessible, and to be able to hold an eye on my inbox without continuously reducing or switching windows around.
The standard of the picture is excellent-very sharp and transparent with a natural color. Contrast is still quite good, while black levels are not as good as current television or handheld devices with an OLED screen on the higher end. But in truth, you just note at night in a darkened room. The matte screen even lets me set up my home office in front of a set of windows without the need to fight back. Onscreen text looks amazing, and the night mode preset that decreases brightness levels and changes whites to warmer hues is often good for operating late.
Video looks really fine, but I haven’t been able to get Netflix and Amazon to download to the 4K display. I’m using the newest and biggest iteration of usb-c to connect to a late-model HP laptop. If you have troubleshooting ideas, let me know. But, unprotected 4k video from places like YouTube looks fantastic. The LG 27UN850-W monitor may not have a strong refresh rate by 2020 standards, though so athletes and people viewing live sports may be happier looking elsewhere.
The 2-way adjustability of this display makes it very easy to use on long working days. The stand is also remarkably sturdy and more premium than the images suggest. I figured it was plastic, but it’s metal. So, I don’t have to think about tipping the computer off my desk when I change the panel. It’s also cleverly easy to assemble without instruments or playing with a lot of little screws.
Overall, LG 27UN850-W is an almost perfect monitor for home function, and LG seems to have prioritized productivity over entertainment in its design decisions, which is nice for me. It has a sleek, streamlined style relative to many other overwrought fashion choices geared to cater to gamers, which is good as my “office” is also our family space. And, IMHO, matte displays are a lot more fun for reading and writing than glossy ones.
