My Honest ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ Review
This monitor has exceeded my expectations right out of the box. Assembly was quiet simple. Connect the base, put in the power, and connect the HDMI or DP cable, and you’re ready to go. The only complaint I have right now is that the rear IO ports are a bit too near to the display backplate. I had planned to use a Cable Matters DP cable with locks, but the bigger plug on that one required me to use the cable that came with the monitor. Due to the same tight tolerances, getting the cable to click into the display was also a challenge. When I finally got it in place, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor turned on straight away.
I used the Heaven benchmark to fine-tune the settings and check how the monitor performed. There was some flickering at first. I went into Windows Display settings and increased the Hz to QHD, which appeared to significantly lessen the zigzagging in shadow borders, but there was still a small amount of zigzagging in shadow borders. I discovered the OC option in the Monitor’s menu, which instantly fixed the problem. I went ahead and increased the Hz setting in both Windows Display settings and Nvidia Control Panel, and I haven’t looked back since.
I was able to use Nvidia to OC the display to 165(!)Hz with no flickering or stuttering. Consider me wowed! I know the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor’s quoted refresh rate is 155Hz, so being able to go higher is a good bonus.
The ELMB feature is also rather fantastic! I can see text on windows while moving them around since the picture is buttery smooth. I wouldn’t call it crystal clear, but it’s certainly pleasant!
The IPS Panel on ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor is stunning. Sitting next to my 4K IPS panel, the colors are quite similar on normal settings, and the brightness is nearly the same. I anticipate the backlights to last longer than the second monitor I bought for the same price. I’ll update this review if anything changes or this monitor stops working, but I believe ASUS nailed the nail on the head with this one. The monitor is fantastic!
